Acupuncture in Bath
Personalised acupuncture that begins with listening carefully, understanding the wider picture and tailoring treatment to you.
Acupuncture has its roots in East Asian medicine and involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles at carefully selected points on the body.
No two people arrive with exactly the same story. I take time to understand what you are experiencing, your health history and what may be influencing how you feel. Your treatment is then planned around you—not simply around the name of a condition.
My training incorporates Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element acupuncture, alongside further training in neurological, sports and scalp acupuncture. Where appropriate, I may also discuss practical aspects of nutrition and lifestyle, while working alongside any conventional healthcare you are receiving.
A thoughtful, individual approach
What can acupuncture support?
People come for acupuncture for many different reasons. Some are looking for help with a specific problem, while others are experiencing a combination of symptoms that are affecting their day-to-day wellbeing.
I commonly work with people seeking support for musculoskeletal pain and tension, headaches and migraine, menopause symptoms, stress and sleep difficulties, as well as people living with neurological conditions or symptoms associated with cancer treatment.
Treatment is always adapted to the individual, taking into account your health, medical care and what you would most like support with.
What treatment may involve
Each appointment begins with a conversation about how you have been feeling and anything that has changed since your previous visit. I may also use traditional diagnostic methods, including observing the tongue and feeling the pulse, to help guide your treatment.
Depending on your individual needs, treatment may draw on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element acupuncture, alongside approaches including Master Tung acupuncture, scalp and neurological acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and electroacupuncture. I may also incorporate moxibustion, cupping, gua sha or gentle acupressure where appropriate.
Once the needles are in place, you will usually have time to rest quietly. Many people find this part of the appointment calm and unhurried.
What to expect
Before you come
Please eat normally before your appointment and wear loose, comfortable clothing where possible. Bring details of any medication, supplements and relevant medical information.
Your first appointment
Your initial appointment lasts approximately 90 minutes. We will discuss your current concerns, health history and the wider factors that may be affecting how you feel. This is followed by an acupuncture treatment tailored to you.
Follow-up appointments
Follow-up appointments include time to review how you have been since your previous visit and adapt your treatment accordingly. The recommended frequency will depend on your individual circumstances, and there is no requirement to commit to a fixed course.
Frequently asked questions
-
People seek acupuncture for a wide range of reasons. I commonly see people looking for support with musculoskeletal pain and tension, headaches and migraine, menopause symptoms, stress and sleep difficulties, as well as people living with neurological conditions or symptoms associated with cancer treatment.
Whether acupuncture is appropriate will depend on your individual circumstances, which we can discuss at your initial consultation.
-
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and most people find treatment very manageable. You may feel a brief sensation as a needle is inserted, followed by sensations such as tingling, warmth, heaviness or a dull ache. Treatment should not feel uncomfortably painful, and I will always adjust what I am doing if needed.
-
There isn't a set number. It depends on what you are seeking help with, how long it has been present and how you respond to treatment. Some people notice changes relatively quickly, while longer-standing or more complex concerns may benefit from treatment over a longer period. We will review your progress as we go, and there is no requirement to book a fixed course.
-
When carried out by an appropriately trained practitioner, acupuncture is generally considered safe. I use sterile, single-use disposable needles and follow appropriate infection-control procedures. Before treatment, I will also ask about your health, medication and medical history so that treatment can be adapted where necessary.
-
Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional healthcare rather than instead of it. Please tell me about any diagnoses, medication and treatment you are receiving so that your acupuncture can be adapted appropriately. Where necessary, I may suggest speaking with your GP, consultant or other healthcare professional before treatment.
-
Your first appointment lasts approximately 90 minutes. We will talk through what has brought you to see me, your health history, medication and any wider factors that may be relevant. I will then explain my treatment approach before your first acupuncture treatment.
-
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. Depending on the points being used, I may need access to areas such as your lower legs, arms, abdomen or back. Draping is available where necessary and your comfort and privacy will always be respected.
-
Acupuncture can be adapted for many people, but there are circumstances where particular techniques or points may not be appropriate. Please let me know if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, take blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding disorder, have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, or are receiving medical treatment. We can then decide what is appropriate for you.
